As the 2003 football season unfolded week by week it became clear that this could be a very special season. The Cougars rolled through the regular season as they posted a perfect 10-0 record. Included in the 10-0 record was another MML championship, and their seventh consecutive year qualifying for the state playoffs. Also a Cincinnati Enquirer #1 ranking ad a #2 ranking in the whole state of Ohio. Several Cougars turned in banner years, starting with defensive lineman Bobby Baker as he was voted First team All Ohio, SW Ohio defensive player of the year and defensive player of the year. Quarterback Matt Root set numerous records for the Cougars. Records that were broken included single seas records for passing yards, single game passing yards, and touchdown passes in a season. Others receiving post season honors included First team All Ohio Josh Glancy and Brad Davidson. Players receiving All League Honors included Ryan Williams, Derek Melton, Kyle Turner, Brad Davidson, John Hazelwood, Matt Root, Josh Glancy, James Wright, Bobby Baker, Phil Ohlinger, Adam Crouch, Eric Knapp, and Michael Pressler. Congratulations to all the players and coaches made this season a memorable one.
A Playoff of Run to Remember!
The Cougars entered the state playoffs with the goal of winning their first ever state championship. That goal was nearly met as a loss to Avon Lake 10-7 in the championship game played in Massillon. The road to the state championship game left a school and a community with great memories and a tremendous amount of pride. The Cougars began their quest for a state title in the first round of the playoffs as they defeated Vandalia Butler 35-32. With two minutes left on the clock, the Cougars trailing, and the ball on their own eight yard line they put together a miraculous drive and scored the winning touchdown with seconds left on the clock as Matt Root connected with Ryan Williams to secure the victory. The Cougars moved to Welcome Stadium for their second round game, where they defeated Dayton Carroll, 27-10. The Cougars played Kings in their regional finals at Princeton and defeated the Knights 35-13. As they won their region for the second time in four years, it advanced to them to the Final Four in the State. As in the past, thousands of Cougars faithful fans watched as they defeated Brookhaven 33-13 which advanced the Cougars to their first ever trip to the State finals. A welcome home parade and a reception a the high school finished off what will go down as the best football season in school history.
