The Edgewood High School football team made history during the 2000 season. No MML team had ever won five straight league titles until the Cougars this year. In the process they also made it to the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. The football team recorded a 10-2 record, the third year in a row they have won 10 or more games.
The highlight of the 2000 season was the last regular season game as the Cougars had to travel to Talawanda. Both teams were unbeaten in MML play and the Braves thought they had the Cougars in their sites. It was a sad evening for the home team as the proud Edgewood squad rose to the challenge and defeated Talawanda 23-14. Thus another league championship went into the trophy case.
As a program, the football tradition at Edgewood grew stronger during the 2000 season. The Cougars also were undefeated at both the JV and Freshman levels. In grades 9 thru 12 the football teams had a combined record of 28 wins and 2 losses.
Many awards and accomplishments were given to the team and players. Among those were Chris Vennefron, Defensive Player of the Year Jessie Scott, Offensive player of the Year, and Matt Moore as the Player of the Year.
With the success throughout the program at all levels, it looks as though it will continue to make those cool Friday evenings in the fall something special. Congratulations to all players and coaches and remember at Edgewood-- “We’ve got the Edge!”
